I'm new to the tri scene and am looking for a pre-owned 56 cm road bike in good condition (no crashes) that I can either "try/borrow" (I live in North/Central NJ) or buy at a reasonable price.

Nothing fancy needed - I currently own a mountain bike, and plan on doing 2 Sprint tris (one in May, one in July) and wish to find a cost-effective *road* bike to use to fall in love w multi-sports. (Then, I'll convince myself and spouse to drop some money on a decent road bike....I just don't want to ride my 15 year old mountain bike!)

I've seen the ebay "deals" - are those $500 bikes _really_ deals?

Any input welcomed.

check w/ a good local bike shop ( a good one won't push you to a $4000 bike) they'll find you one that fits you and your budget. they'll be able to find you that's the right size for you instead of you guessing. also a mountain bike is fine for your first tri(s) till you get really addicted then you can get a new bike. i'm outside of philly what tri's are you doing?

as for the 'deals' it depends on the bike i got a $2K for $700 but it took me a couple years of searching before I got lucky

Thx for suggestions, Joe.

I am registered for Watchung Lake NJ tri (sprint) 5/31 and NJ Tri (sprint) 7/26 - Mercer county - a little closer to you in Bucks.

Yes, I traded messages w another athlete who lives close by, he offered me his trek 2000 to use for the summer, 56 cm frame which seems to fit perfectly.

Been using it for a short while and it is great.

It's amazing and incredibly kind that a total stranger would do that for me .... what a great community!
